Every year a symposium is organized by S.V. Paradoks. S.V. Paradoks is the study association of Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine at the University of Twente. The symposium discusses current topics in biomedical technology, medicine and engineering, such as innovations, (ongoing) research and new discoveries. Through the unique collaboration between the studies Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Medicine, S.V. Paradoks contributes to innovations in health care and the related research field.
Symposium Human Machine Synergy 2026
We look back on an amazing edition of the symposium. It was a day filled with inspiring talks, meaningful connections at the company fair, and insight in the collaboration between humans and technology. As the organizing committee, we are incredibly proud of what we achieved together. Here are some pictures to give you an impression of the day! We would like to express our sincere thanks to the symposium chairs, speakers, activists, companies, research groups, the Paradoks board, and last but not least: to you. Without all these people, the symposium Human Machine Synergy would not have been possible!
Human-Machine Synergy, oftewel de implementatie van robots en technologische apparatuur in de zorg.
Technologische toepassingen zoals exoskeletten en de Da Vinci-robot worden al jaren in de praktijk gebruikt, maar zijn zeker nog niet uitontwikkeld. Daarnaast worden ook de nieuw opkomende technologieën zoals softrobotics, elektronische hersenimplantaten en ‘gezelligheidsrobots’ steeds vaker ingezet. Al deze toepassingen laten zien hoe belangrijk de samenwerking is tussen mens en machine.
Met dit symposium willen we laten zien welke mogelijkheden er ontstaan, wanneer zorg en technologie hand in hand gaan.

Human-Machine Synergy
Human-Machine Synergy, or the implementation of robots and technological equipment in healthcare.
Technological applications such as exoskeletons and prostheses have been used in practice for years but are certainly not yet fully developed. In addition, newly emerging technologies such as soft robotics, the Da Vinci robot, and “companionship robots” are also being used more and more often. All these applications demonstrate the importance of cooperation between humans and machines.
With this symposium, we want to show the possibilities that arise, when healthcare and technology go hand in hand.

Rector magnificus van de Universiteit Twente
Tom Veldkamp is rector magnificus van de Universiteit Twente. Als lid van het College van Bestuur is hij verantwoordelijk voor onderwijs, onderzoek en academische ontwikkeling. Hij heeft een achtergrond in de aardwetenschappen en bekleedde vóór zijn benoeming tot rector diverse bestuurlijke en academische functies binnen de universiteit. In zijn werk zet hij zich in voor grensverleggend onderzoek, innovatief onderwijs en de verbinding tussen wetenschap, technologie en maatschappelijke impact.

Tom Veldkamp is the Rector Magnificus of the University of Twente. As a member of the Executive Board, he is responsible for education, research, and academic development. He has a background in Earth Sciences and, prior to his appointment as rector, held various administrative and academic positions within the university. In his work, he is committed to groundbreaking research, innovative education, and the connection between science, technology, and societal impact.

Als burgemeester van de gemeente Enschede, alumnus van de studierichting Technische Bedrijfskunde èn oud-docent en projectleider draag ik de University of Twente een zeer warm hart toe. Daarom ga ik graag in op het verzoek om mijn steun uit te spreken voor het symposium van Studievereniging Paradoks.
Voor onze stad en onze regio zijn studierichtingen als biomedische technologie en technische geneeskunde enorm belangrijk. Goed dat er een vereniging is die de belangen van deze groep studenten behartigt, en de onderlinge contacten en kennisoverdracht bevordert, bijvoorbeeld door dit symposium over “Human-Machine Synergy” in maart. Dat verdient alle steun.

As the Mayor of the municipality of Enschede, an alumnus of the Industrial Engineering and Management program, and a former lecturer and project leader, I hold the University of Twente very close to my heart. Therefore, I am happy to respond to the request to express my support for the symposium organized by the Student Association Paradoks.
For our city and region, programs such as Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine are extremely important. It is great that there is an association that represents the interests of these students and promotes connections and knowledge exchange among them, for example through this symposium on “Human-Machine Synergy” in March. This deserves full support.

Opleidingsdirecteur opleidingen BMT en TG
Katja Haijkens is opleidingsdirecteur van de opleidingen Biomedische Technologie en Technische Geneeskunde. Daarnaast is zij directeur onderwijs van het TechMed Centre van de Universiteit Twente. Het TechMed Centre is een toonaangevend innovatiecentrum dat impact maakt op de gezondheidszorg door middel van onderzoek, innovatie en onderwijs. Met een ervaring van 30 jaar in het hoger onderwijs heeft zij onder meer gewerkt als docent, onderwijskundig adviseur en in verschillende managementrollen.
Human-machine synergy is een mooi thema voor dit studentensymposium, omdat het de cruciale samenwerking tussen technologie en de mens belicht. In onze snel veranderende wereld zijn innovatieve oplossingen nodig om de gezondheidszorg te verbeteren en de synergie tussen mens en machine speelt hierin een sleutelrol. Het stimuleert niet alleen de efficiëntie, maar ook de kwaliteit van de zorg.
Ik kijk uit naar alle interessante sprekers die hun inzichten en ervaringen zullen delen. Hun diverse achtergronden en expertise zullen ongetwijfeld inspirerende discussies opleveren en ons helpen onze kennis over dit belangrijke onderwerp te verdiepen. Laten we samen onderzoeken hoe we de toekomst van de gezondheidszorg kunnen vormgeven!

Katja Haijkens is Director of Education for the Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine programs. In addition, she is Director of Education at the TechMed Centre of the University of Twente. The TechMed Centre is a leading innovation hub that creates impact in health care through research, innovation, and education. With thirty years of experience in higher education, she has worked as a lecturer, educational consultant, and in various management roles.
Human machine synergy is a fitting theme for this student symposium, as it highlights the crucial collaboration between technology and people. In our rapidly changing world, innovative solutions are needed to improve health care, and the synergy between humans and machines plays a key role in this. It not only enhances efficiency, but also improves the quality of care.
I look forward to the many interesting speakers who will share their insights and experiences. Their diverse backgrounds and expertise will undoubtedly lead to inspiring discussions and help us deepen our understanding of this important topic.
